10kV vs 20kV Surge Protection: Which Is Better for LED Stadium Floodlights?

Outdoor LED stadium floodlights are exposed to lightning, switching transients, and unstable power conditions. Choosing an appropriate surge protection level is therefore important for protecting high-power LED fixtures, particularly on tall poles and in exposed locations.

10kV or 20kV: Which Should You Choose?

There is no single surge rating suitable for every outdoor lighting project. The required level depends on the installation environment, electrical system, lightning exposure, and project specification.

For outdoor lighting applications, 10kV can provide enhanced protection, while 20kV offers a higher level of transient immunity for more demanding environments. ANSI C136.2-2023 defines typical, enhanced, and extreme exposure levels of 6kV/3kA, 10kV/5kA, and 20kV/10kA respectively.

For stadium and airport applications, 20kV/10kA is identified as an extreme exposure level in guidance based on ANSI C136.2.

Why Stadium Floodlights Need Strong Surge Protection

Sports floodlights are often installed at considerable heights, with long cable runs and exposure to outdoor electrical conditions. A surge can damage sensitive components such as the LED driver and control electronics.
