Sports Lighting Designer Custom Layout Plans For New Build Pitches UK

New-build football pitches in the UK need more than a selection of high-power LED floodlights. The position of lighting columns, mounting height, beam angle, aiming direction and luminaire output should be considered together to achieve the required illumination and uniformity.

FORTOMO provides professional LED sports lighting solutions that can be incorporated into custom sports lighting layouts for football pitches, training grounds, schools and other outdoor sports facilities.

Why Custom Lighting Layouts Matter

Every football pitch is different. Pitch dimensions, pole locations, mounting height, surrounding buildings and required lighting performance can all affect the final lighting design.

A professional lighting layout can determine:

  • Number of lighting columns
  • Column positions
  • Mounting height
  • Luminaire quantity
  • Beam angles
  • Aiming directions
  • Power requirements
  • Lighting uniformity
  • Potential glare and spill light

For a new-build pitch, planning these factors before construction can help avoid costly changes to pole foundations, electrical infrastructure and luminaire positions later.

FORTOMO 41SL for Football Pitch Lighting

The FORTOMO 41SL LED Sports Light is available in 300W, 400W and 500W versions, producing up to 75,000 lumens with luminous efficacy of 150–170 lm/W .

The 41SL supports multiple optical configurations, including NEMA 2/3/4/5/6 and 7°, 15°, 25°, 35° and 45° beam angles . This provides flexibility when designing lighting layouts for different mounting heights and pitch configurations.

Other features include:

  • UGR <19
  • IP66 protection
  • 360° adjustable mounting
  • 10kV/20kV surge protection options
  • 0-10V, PWM, DALI and DMX512 controls
  • 3000K–6000K and RGBW options
  • Low EPA and lightweight design
  • Up to 100,000 hours rated life

How to Create a Football Pitch Lighting Layout

For a new UK football pitch, the lighting designer should first define the pitch dimensions and target lighting level.

The next step is to establish suitable column positions and mounting heights. The 41SL's different beam angles can then be selected according to the distance between each column and the areas that need illumination.

Narrower optics can help project light over longer distances, while wider optics can provide broader coverage. The final combination should be verified through professional photometric calculations rather than selected by wattage alone.

Reduce Glare and Unwanted Spill Light

Good sports lighting design should illuminate the playing area without unnecessarily lighting surrounding properties, roads or spectator areas.

The 41SL's range of optical distributions allows designers to control where light is directed. Its UGR<19 specification can also support projects where glare control is an important consideration.

For pitches located close to residential areas, schools or roads, the lighting layout should also consider aiming angles, boundary spill light and operating schedules.

Custom Sports Lighting for UK New-Build Projects

FORTOMO focuses on professional LED sports lighting and high-mast lighting for international projects. The product range includes the 41SL alongside higher-power sports and high-mast solutions such as the 40SL, 37SL and 46SL.

For UK new-build football pitches, distributors, contractors and lighting designers can select the appropriate FORTOMO luminaire according to:

  • Pitch size
  • Pole height
  • Required lighting performance
  • Beam distribution
  • Environmental conditions
  • Control requirements

A custom lighting layout helps ensure that the selected LED sports lights work as part of a complete system rather than as individual floodlights.
