Low Voltage Safe Sports Lighting For Junior School Sports Facilities UK
Junior schools in the UK need sports lighting that provides clear visibility while keeping safety, energy efficiency and easy operation in mind. For outdoor football pitches, MUGAs, tennis courts and school training areas, the lighting system should be designed around the needs of young players, staff and visitors.
FORTOMO provides professional LED sports lighting and high-mast lighting solutions for outdoor sports facilities, with high-power luminaires, flexible optics and control options.
Safety Comes First in School Sports Lighting
School sports facilities have different requirements from professional stadiums. Lighting needs to provide a comfortable and consistent visual environment while supporting safe movement around the playing area.
UK school estate guidance highlights the importance of maintaining safe electrical installations and ensuring external lighting is sufficient for safe use of the site. Electrical testing should be carried out by competent professionals.
For this reason, a school sports lighting project should consider:
- Safe electrical installation
- Appropriate protection and grounding
- Reliable outdoor-rated luminaires
- Glare and spill-light control
- Easy switching and dimming
- Regular inspection and maintenance
LED Sports Lights for Junior School Facilities
Modern LED sports lighting can provide efficient illumination with instant switching and flexible control. Sport England notes that modern LED lighting and switching technologies can improve efficiency, performance and operational flexibility for sports facilities.
FORTOMO offers a range of LED sports and high-mast lights that can be considered for school applications, including the 41SL, 40SL, 37SL and 25SL series.
Depending on the size of the facility and required mounting height, lighting designers can select suitable power levels and beam angles for football fields, tennis courts, MUGAs and other outdoor school sports areas.
Low-Voltage and Electrical Safety Considerations
When a school project specifies low-voltage or reduced electrical risk requirements, the complete electrical system should be reviewed—not only the LED luminaire.
The lighting designer and qualified electrical contractor should confirm:
- Input voltage and driver specifications
- Protection and isolation requirements
- Earthing and bonding
- Surge protection
- Cable and connection requirements
- Control system configuration
- Maintenance access
The Electricity at Work Regulations apply to electrical systems across different voltage levels, with the focus being the prevention of danger and injury.
Therefore, any claim that a sports light is “low voltage” should be confirmed against the actual luminaire and project electrical specification.
Suitable Lighting for UK School Sports Areas
CIBSE's current LG4 Sports Lighting guide provides recommendations for sports lighting and is aligned with BS EN 12193. It covers lighting principles, individual sports, maintenance, operation and equipment specification.
For junior school projects, designers should determine the required lighting level and uniformity according to the sport, playing level and facility type rather than selecting a luminaire based only on wattage.
FORTOMO's multiple sports-lighting models and optical options allow project designers to develop lighting solutions according to field dimensions, mounting height and required light distribution.
