Impact Resistant LED Pitch Floodlights for School Playground MUGAs

Impact Resistant IK08 LED Pitch Floodlights

School playgrounds and Multi-Use Games Areas (MUGAs) need reliable floodlighting that can withstand demanding outdoor environments while providing clear and uniform illumination for students and community users.

For UK schools, choosing a robust LED pitch floodlight is particularly important where luminaires are installed around sports courts, football pitches and other active recreational areas.

FORTOMO's 40SL LED Sports Light is a high-power outdoor sports lighting solution designed for large-area applications, with 500W, 600W and 750W options.

Why Impact Protection Matters for School MUGAs

MUGAs are active environments where footballs, basketballs and other sports equipment can occasionally come into contact with lighting equipment.

An impact-resistant luminaire enclosure can provide additional protection for the LED system and optical components.

IK ratings are used to classify the resistance of electrical equipment enclosures to mechanical impact. IK08 corresponds to a 5-joule impact level under the relevant impact classification system.

If IK08 is specified for a school project, the exact luminaire model should be supported by the manufacturer's applicable test documentation.

Low EPA design

The 40SL also uses a pure AL1070 cold-forged aluminium housing with a removable driver box, supporting thermal management and easier maintenance.

Suitable for School Sports and MUGA Lighting

Sport England identifies artificial lighting as an important consideration when developing MUGAs and artificial pitches, particularly because outdoor lighting can extend the usable hours of sports facilities.

For school projects, the lighting design should consider the sports being played, required illuminance, uniformity, mounting height and surrounding environment.

The 40SL's multiple optical options allow designers to select a suitable light distribution according to the pitch dimensions and mounting arrangement. This can help place light onto the playing surface while reducing unnecessary spill light.

IP66 Protection for Outdoor School Applications

School playground floodlights are exposed to rain, moisture, dust and changing temperatures.

The 40SL is rated IP66 , making it suitable for outdoor wet, damp and dry locations according to its product specification.

For UK MUGAs and school pitches, this provides a practical combination of high-power illumination and outdoor protection.

Consider Impact, Glare and Light Spill Together

Impact protection is only one part of a successful MUGA lighting design.

A complete school sports lighting project should also consider:

Appropriate beam distribution
Glare control
Light spill toward neighbouring properties
Lighting uniformity
Pole height and luminaire positioning
Operating schedules and controls
Maintenance access

UK sports-lighting guidance specifically highlights the importance of considering the visual environment when designing lighting for MUGAs and artificial pitches.
