Do Wireless LED Floodlights Need EU RED Compliance?

When LED sports floodlights include wireless communication modules such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, or LoRa , EU compliance requirements become more complex than for conventional wired luminaires. The key question is whether the product intentionally transmits or receives radio waves for communication.

Under EU Directive 2014/53/EU, the Radio Equipment Directive (RED) applies to radio equipment placed on the EU market. Equipment that communicates exclusively through physical connections, such as cables, is outside the RED definition.

When Does RED Apply to LED Floodlights?

An LED floodlight with an integrated wireless communication function can fall within RED scope because the wireless module intentionally uses radio spectrum.

Examples include:

  • Wi-Fi-controlled LED floodlights
  • Bluetooth lighting controls
  • Zigbee wireless lighting systems
  • LoRa-based control modules
  • Other radio-enabled smart lighting equipment

The specific conformity assessment depends on the wireless technology, module, product configuration, and applicable harmonised standards.

What Does RED Compliance Cover?

RED establishes essential requirements covering areas such as health and safety, electromagnetic compatibility, and efficient use of radio spectrum . Additional requirements can apply to certain categories of radio equipment.

Therefore, a buyer should not assume that ordinary LED safety or EMC documentation automatically covers a wireless lighting product under RED.

Adding a radio module changes the compliance assessment.

What Should EU Buyers Ask Suppliers?

For a smart LED sports lighting project, buyers should confirm:

  • Radio module manufacturer and model
  • RED documentation
  • Applicable harmonised standards
  • EMC and safety documentation
  • Antenna configuration
  • CE marking and EU Declaration of Conformity
  • Whether the wireless function is integrated into the luminaire or provided through an external gateway

The European Commission maintains the current list of harmonised standards supporting RED, so the applicable standards should be checked against the actual product configuration.
